Sending midi start messages

Ran into a problem at practice today.
I need to have my loops in sooperlooper be a certain length so that a max patch that someone else is using plays audio files back at the proper pitch.
I set up a loop in SL that I load into Loop1 and then sync to that. I then start looping in the other slots. Works great.
We have another band member that is using Ableton Live. It seems that SL is not sending a midi start message to him unless I use the record function on loop1. Any suggestions for this?
I noticed a global mappable command that looked somewhat promising - use_midi_start , use_midi_stop. They didn't do anything. Ideally, what I would want to happen is for the loop that I load to not playback on load and to send a start signal on the trigger of it.
