Recording from audio line-in

I have a pretty simple setup: an external synthesizer connected to a PC via its soundcard Line In, and it can be heard if Line In is unmuted in the alsamixer, so it definitely works.
However, I can't figure out a way to use this audio input in the sooperlooper.
When connecting devices to sooperlooper using qjackctl, there are two capture devices listed, but nothing changes if they are connected to sooperlooper's line_in1/2.
It seems to me like a really basic thing to want but no amount of googling helped to figure out how to record a loop from a soundcard's line-in (not a mic-in)
