Window auto-resizes and crops part of loop from bottom

When I start SL, it opens with the window height set too shallow, so the bottom third of the loop is cropped out.
When I manually resize the window to show the full loop, then Ctrl-F2 to add a new loop, SL resizes the window height and again crops the bottom third of the bottom loop.

I'm running SL 1.7.8, on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, installed from the main Ubuntu apt feed.
Any advice?
